Former world lightweight champion BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS and former featherweight champion YURIORKIS GAMBOA will fight in a Battle of the Undefeated for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight championship, Saturday, April 14, at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Arena Box U.S., televised live on HBO as the main event of World Championship Boxing, beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET.

Rios (29-0-1, 22 KOs), the former WBA lightweight champion, from Oxnard, Calif., enters this fight having won 10 of his previous 11 fights by knockout. Gamboa (21-0, 16 KOs), the former world featherweight champion who won Olympic gold in 2004 for his native Cuba and now resides in Miami, Fla., will return to the ring having won eight of his previous 11 by stoppage. In short, these warriors have never met a chin they didn’t want to smash.

Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr (44-0-1, 31 KOs) will fight Marco Antonio Rubio(53-5-1, 46 KOs) on February 4 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Chavez Jr. is the current WBC middleweight champion which he won from Sebastian Zbik (30-1-0) last year.

He then defended his title against Peter Manfredo Jr. and won via 5th round knockout. UFC 142: Featherweight champion José Aldo will no doubt be pounding the Everlast heavy bag pretty hard as he prepares to defend his title on his home turf against American Chad Mendes this coming January 14, 2012. The event will be taking place in Rio de Janeiro at the HSBC Arena and will pit the impressively aggressive and acrobatically inclined Brazilian against the 26 year-old Mendes, a native Californian who first gained attention wrestling in high school and later attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he continued to rank highly in the Pac-10.

For his part, Brazil’s Aldo comes from extremely humble roots where he was not always able to afford food. Aside from being a famed athlete, he is also well known as a highly active soccer fan, rooting for Rio’s local Clube de Regatas do Flamengo as well as Chelsea in the United Kingdom. Clearly, the slightly older and taller Aldo will be a serious hometown favorite with a pretty severe home advantage. Rounding out the night will be a number of main and preliminary bouts pitting Brazilian native sons against competitors from around the world. Among them, Vitor Belfort, who is married to famed actress and model Joana Prado, will be facing the USA’s Anthony Johnson. Johnson, a welterweight who recently appeared in the acclaimed MMA drama “Warrior,” will be making his debut as a middleweight in Rio. Brazilian welterweight Erick Silva will also be making short work of his boxing heavy bag while preparing to battle countryman Carlo Prater. Lightweight Edson Barboza will also face England’s Terry Etim.

UFC 141: “Lesnar vs. Overeem” invades the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on a special night with a new start time, as the event airs at 10 p.m. ET on Fri., Dec. 30, 2011, on pay-per-view.

Headlining the card is the return of Brock Lesnar, who says he’s back and feeling better than ever after having 12 inches of his intestines removed this past May. He certainly looks healthy as an ox.

Opposite Lesnar is Alistair Overeem, who will be making his debut inside the Octagon at the age of 31 and having been a part of over 60 combat sports fights throughout his already illustrious career.

On the line is a heavyweight championship fight against freshly crowned king Junior dos Santos sometime in 2012. Get ready for a doozy, Maniacs.

Abner Mares(22-0-1, 13 KOs) will fight Joseph Agbeko(28-3, 22 KOs) on December 3 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Mares, a Mexico native living in Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., won a majority decision from Ghana’s Agbeko in the first bout, but it was one of the most controversial fights of the year because of the heavily criticized performance of referee Russell Mora.

Mora called a questionable knockdown against two-time titleholder Agbeko in the first round when he went down on what looked like a slip. Mares also landed low blows repeatedly throughout the fight. Mora warned him for the infraction a few times, but never deducted any points — and eventually stopped warning him altogether.

But the real controversy came in the 11th round when Mora clearly missed a call, ruling another knockdown against Agbeko (28-3, 22 KOs) after Mares had slugged him with yet another low blow, this one a left hand directly in the groin. The botched call changed what had been a likely 10-9 round for Agbeko to a 10-8 round for Mares.

Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko(56-3, 49 KO) will fight cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck(36-4, 22 KOs) on December 10,2011 at Düsseldorf, Germany.

The fight will be the first for the 35-year-old Klitschko (56-3, 49 KOs) since a landslide decision victory against titlist David Haye in their heavily hyped July 2 bout in Hamburg, Germany.

In 2007, Haye, also a former cruiserweight champion, went to Mormeck’s native France, survived a fourth-round knockdown and rallied to knock him out in the seventh round to win the cruiserweight title.

After the loss, Mormeck (36-4, 22 KOs) took nearly two years off before returning as a heavyweight. He has won each of his three heavyweight bouts against second-tier opposition: Vinny Maddalone, Fres Oquendo and Timur Ibragimov.
